Riverwood Heart Pine is literally the heart or middle of the tree. It only comes about by slow growth. The heart pine that we recover, whether from the bottom of the river or from pilings as part of a support structure, has been preserved from the elements, retaining the natural properties of the tree.
When we recover the logs and cut into them, they have that fresh pine smell – just like the day they were harvested over 100 years ago. We pull these logs up and cut them to our own specifications. It can become wide plank flooring as shown here, or a chevron mantle, or beautiful paneling – whatever we think its characteristics lend it to.
The special beauty of heart pine is its color and growth rings. If you look at a cross section of today’s pine you will see 2-3 growth rings per inch. When you look at old growth Riverwood Heart Pine it has anywhere from 10 to 30 growth rings per inch, possibly even more.
We provide two different yet equally beautiful types of wood: Riverwood Heart Pine (shown here)- logs reclaimed from the bottom of Carolina rivers, and Antique Heart Pine - wood reclaimed from old structures such as barns, mills, and other historical buildings. We will be glad to work with you on wider widths, single width flooring, or special requests.
